Description

    Warren, OH- The Western Reserve Bank Counterfeit $3; Counterfeit $5; Raised $10 1825-63 C20a; C64; UNL Wolka 2741-18; -34; -44
The Western Reserve Bank was a long-lived successful concern which inevitably meant that it attracted its fair share of counterfeit and other spurious issues. This trio of notes includes a pretty well done counterfeit $3 dating from 1825 grading a problem-free Fine-Very Fine, a later 1863 counterfeit $5 on bright paper that grades Very Fine with a small spot of stamp hinge residue on the back, and an excessively rare raised $10 that grades perhaps Good, with the normal allotment of margin chips, divots, tears and body holes. Aside from being unique, this note is interesting on two other counts. The cuts made in the host $1 note to insert the "TEN DOLLARS" tablet are still clearly visible, providing clear evidence as to how the alteration was made. Haxby was unaware of this alteration. He lists (as 435-R10) a $10 raised from the bank's $1 that was uniface. This example has a red back and meant more work for the alterer. Knowledgeable obsoletes collectors will not be terribly concerned about the condition of the $10 as it may be their only chance to acquire this great rarity.
