Troy, OH- The State Bank of Ohio, Miami County Branch $1 (3) 1853-58 G1492; UNL; G1492a Wolka 2590-04; -05; -06
This group of three $1s from the Miami County Branch show the progression of how note signing on small denominations was handled. The earliest 1853 dated note was signed by Gustavus Swan, the President of the statewide network. It was soon realized that this task needed to be delegated and J.R. Flynn was appointed Vice President, with one of his major duties being to sign all notes of the $1, $2, and $3 denomination. While plates were being altered to reflect this new officer, a "V" was manually written in before "Prest." This is reflected by the second note dated 1856. Finally the plates were changed to read "Vice Prest." as is reflected by the third note dated 1858. All three notes grade Very Good-Fine (the manuscript "V" variety has a short fold split) and make an interesting study group for the specialist. These notes are surprisingly rare from this branch, with the first variety (Prest.) represented by three examples, two of which are in the Cincinnati Historical Society, the second variety (handwritten "V") unique, and the third variety (Vice Prest.) represented by eight examples, six of which are in the Cincinnati Historical Society.
From The Wendell Wolka Collection (Total: 3 notes)

    Estimate: $360 - $425.
