Rare counterfeitsToledo, OH- The State Bank of Ohio, Commercial Branch Counterfeit $3; Counterfeit $5 Nov. 1, 1848; Faded UNL; C1418 (SENC) Wolka 2574-10; -14
The Commercial Branch in Toledo was one of the State Bank of Ohio's least successful locations, being closed by the bank in 1855, a scant nine and a half years after it opened. Even the least successful units of the State Bank, however, attracted counterfeiters as witnessed by these two notes. Neither is particularly well executed but undoubtedly fooled at least a few people. The $3 grades Fine with good margins and corners, while the $5, which sports a period Indianapolis exchange broker stamp, grades Very Good with a number of left margin foldovers and missing divots. The $3 is represented by three known examples in private hands while the $5 is presently believed to be unique from this branch.
