Tarlton, OH- David King 12-1/2¢; 50¢ Remainder; 75¢ Remainder; check Oct. 20, 1837; Aug. 1849
A combination of both common and rare notes and a fiscal document comprise this lot. David King was a merchant doing business in Tarlton (sometimes spelled "Tarleton") until he moved to Springfield in 1841. King continued to be a successful businessman after the move but died after contracting cholera while helping with the sick in August, 1849. The 12-1/2¢ note, which grades Very Good, is quite rare, with only two examples presently known. The 50¢ and 75¢ notes are somewhat more common; both grading Uncirculated. Perhaps the most poignant item in the grouping is a check dated August, 1849 payable at the Mad River Branch of the State Bank of Ohio which has been endorsed on the back by his eldest son: "Father died August 9th 1849 R.Q. K" The 1850 census shows that the family, which included six children, was not destitute, with real estate valued at $50,000 listed. This is undoubtedly one of the last checks King wrote before he died.
