    Unique 1816 Tappan Scrip Issue

Ravenna, OH- Wm Tappan at Oviatt & Kent 50¢ July 1, 1816 Wolka 2297-04
Ravenna, OH- Treasurer of Portage County 5¢ 1862 Wolka 2299-01
The 1816 scrip note is historically important because it was issued by William Tappan who served as the town's Postmaster in 1816 and was payable at another merchant concern owned by Captain Herman Oviatt and Zenas Kent, who later went on to other banking pursuits including the Franklin Silk Company. This note is presently unique and likely to remain that way, with the only other issue of any kind from Tappan (and apparently from a different issue a year later) in the collection of the Western Reserve Historical Society. The Civil War scrip was issued by the Treasurer of Portage County and was payable to H.L. Day or bearer, suggesting that Henry L. Day, a wealthy local merchant may have been somehow involved in the issue. The note is endorsed on the back by Day. Both notes grade Very Good-Fine with no significant impediments.
