Newark, OH- The Town Council of Newark 50¢ July 1, 1841 Wolka 1949-04
Newark, OH- S.D. King at the Banking Office of A.J. Smith $178.05 Dec. 28, 1847 Check
The 50¢ note was probably issued by the Town of Newark in an attempt to ease the local change shortage during the Panic of 1837. This fully issued example grades Very Good-Fine, with a tiny repaired edge nick in the right margin. This is only the third time we have handled this denomination in the last eleven years. The other item in this lot is a nicely engraved check issued by S.D. King, who is listed in the 1850 Census as an attorney, and payable at the Banking Office of A.J. Smith in Newark. Smith opened his business in 1833 and was apparently successful until 1851. According to newspaper accounts, in December of that year, Smith disappeared with liabilities of between $100,000 and $500,000. The check is quite well done by Rawdon, Wright & Hatch, Cincinnati and grades About Uncirculated. No notes are known from Smith's banking office.
