Newark, OH- Columbus & Lake Erie Rail Road Bond $50 April 1, 1850 Wolka 1927-01
Although PCGS has listed this item as having hailed from New Jersey, it is actually from Ohio. We have only handled only two other examples of this bond over the years. This attractive piece was the product of Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson, Cincinnati and the central vignette includes the train engine Bellville. The railroad was organized in 1845. Seven years later, it reached Newark. The next year, 1853, the name was changed to the Sandusky, Mansfield and Newark Rail Road. In 1869, the B&O Rail Road purchased the route. The $50 bond is the only denomination listed in the Wolka reference and it was assigned a rarity rating of R-5, indicating 11 to 25 known. PCGS Choice About New 58PPQ, with several interest paid rubber-stamped notations along with handwritten notations on the face. We sold a raw Very Fine example for $373.75 in July 2011. A great piece of history.
