    New Salem, OH- The Jefferson Bank of New Salem 25¢; $1; $3; $5 (2) 1817 G6; G12; G14; G16 (2) Wolka 1904-03; -05; -06; -08 (2)
While not terribly rare, the notes of this short-lived (1816-1818) frontier bank are quite interesting artistically. Each dollar denominated note features a vignette related to the War of 1812; the $1 features Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans, the $3 depicts the Battle of Lake Erie, and the $5s the signing of the Treaty of Ghent in Belgium. This treaty ended the war, but was ratified too late to avert the Battle of New Orleans. The owners of the bank were willing to pay extra money to portray these scenes of national significance on notes destined to be used in the middle of the Ohio "wilderness." All five notes grade Very Fine and Better.
