    Massillon, OH- The Bank of Massillon Spurious $1; $5 (2); $10 1842-53 S5; G8a; G8b; G10a Wolka 1609-02; -07; -09; -11
The bank was one of a batch of ten that the state chartered in 1834 and continued in business until it abruptly shuttered its doors in November, 1853 when its principal owner, a New Yorker by the name of H. Dwight, failed. Dwight had invested almost all of the bank's circulation in two railroads, and his collapse took the bank with it. The $1 is a spurious note that bore no resemblance to any genuine issue of the bank. It grades Very Fine on bright paper. The two $5s and $10 are later issues of the bank, put out in its final days, with the earlier $5 grading Fine-Very while the later $5 (which has a few small pin holes) and $10 (which has a small sealed margin tear) that feature attractive orange backs each grade Very Fine.
From The Wendell Wolka Collection (Total: 4 notes)
