    Janesville, WI Merchant Advertisement

Massillon, OH- The Bank of Massillon $5 Jan. 1, 1852 G8b
The Bank of Massillon failed in 1853 and left a number of these notes as reminders of its existence. The note is not particularly rare, but the neat thing about this example is the elaborate Janesville, WI merchant stamp on the back. Edward Dimock and Henry Clark are listed as merchants in the 1850 Federal Census for Janesville, with Dimock then disappearing from later census records. This suggests that this stamp dates from 1853 (after the bank failed, rendering the notes worthless except as paper) to 1860 (when Dimock disappears from the records). The Janesville firm was involved in clothing manufacturing as well as acting as wholesale and retail dealers in dry goods, groceries, crockery, boots, shoes, and iron. Essentially if they did not have it you did not need it! Fine with a tiny white spot in the central vignette
