Gallipolis, OH- Compagnie de Scioto 6¢ 1790
An historic note from one of the very first frauds perpetrated within what would become Ohio, this 6¢ note was issued by the Compagnie de Scioto whose mission was to sell land on which it did not have title to unsuspecting French settlers. The company had failed by 1790 after selling 150,000 acres of land. By 1795, the victims of this scam had been given 24,000 acres of land in the vicinity of Gallipolis, OH by the United States government. This note is signed by William Duer who had served in the Continental Congress and signed the Articles of Confederation. PMG grades this note Fine 12 noting edge damage. A great piece of Ohio and United States history.
