Franklin, OH - The Franklin Silk Company $10 18__ Remainder
An appealing remainder graded PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ that includes a panel illustrating Benjamin Franklin working on his concept of electricity. According to Roger Durand's Interesting Notes About Architecture, the Franklin Silk Company was established in 1836 on land that was purchased from Zenas Kent that was located between South River Street and the Cuyahoga River. Unfortunately, the company experienced a series of obstacles they could not overcome. The mulberry trees they planted died, the winters were too cold for the silkworms, and the river did not supply the amount of water power that was needed for production. The Panic of 1837 did not help either. The company entered receivership in 1839 and the land was sold back to Mr. Kent. Twelve years later the company moved into the old mill and was able to produce several types of fabrics. "All proceeds to fund at-risk and foster youth rehabilitation services through Turning Point Experience and other charities."
