Delaware, OH- The State Bank of Ohio, Delaware County Branch Counterfeit $1; Counterfeit $10 (2) 1849-52 C624; C652 (SENC); UNL Wolka 1027-06; -30; -32
The Delaware County Branch was not immune to counterfeits as these three examples will attest. The $1 note is a particularly poor effort, with Gustavus Swan's portrait on the left end making him look like an axe murderer. The counterfeiter was detail oriented enough to write an manuscript "V" in front of "Prest." on the signature line. This would have been encountered on genuine notes from the late 1855. Fine-Very Fine with a couple of smudges in the signature lines. The 1849 counterfeit $10 is tolerably well done and grades Fine, with only three known examples at present. One of these is in the collection of the Cincinnati Historical Society. The 1852 counterfeit $10 is not seen nearly as often as the earlier $10s and, as usual, is most easily detected by the portrait work. This example grades Fine, with a small paper thin on the back and is unique from this branch.
