Dayton, OH- The State Bank of Ohio, Dayton Branch $1 (2) 1851-61 G576 (SENC); G576a (SENC) Wolka 1003-04; -05
These two notes from the Dayton Branch show the transition that occurred in 1855 when the Vice President for the Bank signed all notes of the $1, $2, and $3 denomination rather than the President. The 1851-dated note bears the signature of Gustavus Swan, whose portrait coincidentally appears on the left end of the note. After 1855, the title on the signature line was changed to "Vice Prest", but some notes bear a manuscript "V" that was added in front of the printed "Prest." in order to use existing stocks of notes. Inventory control was not always good, as this 1861-dated note was issued some six years after the change. These notes each grade Very Good-Fine, with the earlier note presently believed to be unique from this branch, while the later 1861-dated note is one of two examples presently known.
