    Description

    Cuyahoga Falls, OH- W.A. Hanford at the Summit County Bank 5¢, 10¢, 25¢, 50¢ 1862 Wolka 0943-01, -02, -03, -04
Although common, these notes are not without some interesting background. William A Hanford was a local businessman involved in the paper business. He issued these notes, payable at the local branch of the State Bank of Ohio, to alleviate the coin shortage that was widespread during the Civil War. Local historians report that he redeemed all issued notes. Most of the notes today are unissued remainders, both in individual and uncut sheet form. Ironically, Hanford suffered several losses due to fires although he was a fire insurance agent according to the 1870 federal census. Notes with a written serial number are worth a bit more than the unissued remainders. This denomination set grades Uncirculated, with the 5¢ and 10¢ notes being issued examples while the remaining two denominations are remainders.
