DescriptionCuyahoga Falls, OH-A. Hanford payable at Summit County Bank 10¢ 1862
This Choice Crisp Uncirculated Hanford remainder has an interesting background. William A Hanford was a local businessman involved in the paper business. He issued his notes, payable at the local branch of the State Bank of Ohio, to alleviate the coin shortage that was widespread during the Civil War. Local historians report that he redeemed all issued notes. Most of the examples are unissued remainders, both in individual and uncut sheet form. Ironically, Hanford suffered several losses due to fires although he was a fire insurance agent according to the 1870 federal census.
Estimate: $30 - $40.
