Unique photographer scrip note and cabinet card photograph

    Columbus, OH- G.C. Urlin's Gallery 15¢ Wolka 0905-01
G.C. Urlin was a photographer located in downtown Columbus from 1873 until at least 1887. During the Panic of 1873 (some would call it a Depression that lasted for nearly six years) the use of so-called Commission Scrip became popular as a means of encouraging cash sales by offering a discount. In a few cases the Commission Scrip concept, popularized by the Tiffany Bros. of Buffalo, NY, led to imitation, with this note being one such instance. It clearly piggybacks on the concept but just as clearly was produced by someone other than the Tiffany Bros. The note grades About Uncirculated and is the only example presently known. Ex-Schingoethe collection. Also included is a large cabinet card photograph from the late 1880s or 1890s. By 1887, Urlin had taken a partner, Pfeifer, and was located a bit further down High Street. The woman pictured looks like she could have modeled for the note!
