    Cleveland, OH- The State Bank of Ohio, Commercial Branch $1(3) 1854-59 G336; G336a; G336b Wolka 0774-05; -06; -07
The so-called Gustavus Swan $1 (the first president of the bank, his portrait appears on the left end of the note) was in production for an eternity by antebellum America standards. First introduced in 1851, it was still being issued over a decade later. As a result, a number of varieties were created. The first had a presidential signature space because the president was required to sign every note from every branch. After 1855, a vice president was assigned to sign $1s, $2s, and $3s resulting in a vice presidential signature space appearing on the lowest denominations. Finally after 1858 the "ABCo" monogram appeared on many plates as they were reworked, indicating that American Bank Note Company was now the company of record after the merger of most major bank note companies occurred in that year. This lot comprises one of each of these three varieties on the Commercial Branch of the State Bank of Ohio in Cleveland. This branch was organized in 1845 and remained in business until it became the Commercial National Bank of Cleveland (Charter 807) in 1865. The presidential signature space variety (Good-Very Good with a 1.75" margin tear through Swan's head) and the vice president / ABCo monogram (Fine-Very Fine) varieties are unique from this branch, while the vice presidential signature space variety (Very Good-Fine, punch and cut cancelled with a small paper skin on the back) is represented by two examples from this branch.
