Cleveland, OH- The Corporation of Cleaveland 25¢ May 1, 1816 Wolka 0726-03
Everyone usually has one note in the collection that is an absolute rag but embodies tons of history and character. This is that note from the Wendell Wolka collection. The Corporation of Cleaveland (they spelled it that way until about 1831) issued a series of scrip notes to alleviate a chronic shortage of coins. Alfred Kelley was the first president of the village and signed these notes. As a state senator, he would later go on to be the floor manager of the massive General Banking Law of 1845 as it successfully went through the state legislature. Although there are seventeen examples from this series known, a huge percentage of them are in the collections of the Western Reserve Historical Society and Cincinnati Historical Society. At present, we are aware of a single example of each of the four denominations in private hands. This sewn together Fair-About Good example is, in fact, the only example known in either public or private hands of the 25¢ denomination.
