Cleveland, OH- The Commercial Bank of Lake Erie $ Fill In; Counterfeit $2 (2) 1833-37 UNL; C34(2) Wolka 0720-02; 0720-10 (2)
The bank opened in 1816 and was forced to suspend operations from roughly 1818 to 1832 because it could not meet a call for redemption in specie made upon it by the Second Bank of the United States. The bank survived the Panic of 1837, but the state legislature refused to renew its charter upon its expiration in 1842. The bank was able to successfully liquidate its assets and pay holders of notes and debt by 1845. This lot comprises a "Fill In" note (which some might argue is actually a check) and two examples of $2 contemporary counterfeits of Perkins plate design issues of the bank. The counterfeits each grade Very Good-Fine while the "Fill In" note grades About Uncirculated with one tiny corner fold that just touches the frame line in the bottom right corner of the face.
From The Wendell Wolka Collection (Total: 3 notes)
