Cleveland, OH- The Commercial Bank of Lake Erie $3 Sep. 1, 1838 G40 Wolka 0720-16
The bank opened in 1816 and survived temporary suspension in the 1820s before reopening in 1832 and continuing in business until the end of its charter in 1842. To its credit, the bank closed up its affairs without any loss to its stakeholders. Although Haxby knew of this note's existence, he had never seen one or had an idea of what it might look like (thus the SENC and NDA listing). That points to the rarity of this example which is presently believed to be unique. The note grades a pleasant Fine with straight margins and a couple trifling rust spots which in no way detract from this great rarity's appeal.
