Cleveland, OH- The Cleveland Insurance Co. $2 Apr. 10, 1844 Krause G16 Wolka Unlisted
At first blush, this appears to be an issue of the Mississippi Marine and Fire Insurance Company, a fraudulent concern, whose main business was circulating worthless notes. A closer inspection shows that this $2 was payable at the office of the Cleveland Insurance Co. To be sure, the Cleveland Insurance Co. did exist, being in business from 1830 until losses from the Chicago Fire wiped it out in 1871, but we do not know if it was involved with these notes. Although Chet Krause knew of the notes a decade before, these notes never made it into the Ohio state catalog and were unknown to Wolka until 2006. Based on Krause's rarity scale, there are probably between 5 and 10 of these around. This example grades Very Fine-Extremely Fine with a couple of specks in ink erosion in the handwritten portions.
