    Cleveland, OH- The City of Cleveland 5¢; 10¢; 25¢; 50¢ Oct. 16, 1862 Wolka 0714-02; -03; -04; -06
The City of Cleveland issued these notes in 1862 to forestall a local emergency created by the lack of coins with which to conduct business. Newspaper accounts say that the public was tired of dealing with sticky postage stamps as a way of making change. These city orders were so popular that a near riot broke out when some people were unable to obtain notes for their use in November, 1862. Your cataloger believes that the vast majority of these notes were redeemed when fractional currency became more widely available. These four notes represent a complete denomination set, with the 50¢ note being the much scarcer handwritten serial number variety. Very Good and Better, with the 25¢ note having a few fold overs and a small fold split. (Total: 4 notes)
