    Cleveland, OH- The City of Cleveland 5¢; 10¢; 25¢; 50¢ Oct. 16, 1862 Wolka 0714-01; -03; -04; -06
Cleveland issued city orders in October 1862 to relieve the public of sticky postage stamps which seemed to make up the bulk of emergency alternatives to coinage which had disappeared from circulation. The city authorized $50,000 in these orders and began issuing them to the public on November 5, 1862. Two weeks later, public demand was so high that a near riot broke out when not everyone was able to obtain the notes. Surprisingly for a city the size of Cleveland, there were very few private scrip issuers during the Civil War. These notes are usually found in heavily circulated condition, but this set comprises four nicer notes that range from Fine-Very Fine to Uncirculated condition.
