Description

Cincinnati, OH - United States "Branch" Bank, at Cincinnati $20 May 7, 1822 Spurious Issue Haxby UNL, Wolka UNL, Hoober UNL. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent.
This is an intriguing spurious note, related to the second Bank of the United States, Philadelphia branch issues. "Philadelphia" is engraved at the bottom center as the home location; however, it is a fake "sound-alike" title and payable "at Cincinnati." Written "Branch" is inside the engraved title. Crude engraving at the top, without imprint, shows seated Agriculture holding a rake upright as an eagle perches on the tines. Portraits in the corners roughly copy Bank of the U. S. cashier notes. "U.S. BANK" is at left, and "UNITED STATES" at right. Overall, this has an odd look. Not in Haxby, Wolka or Hoober. Some foxing at the right is noted as "Minor Stains." An important, specialized note for Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Bank of the United States collectors.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
