Cincinnati, OH- The Franklin Bank of Cincinnati $3; $20 1835-38 Wolka 0475-04; -12
The Franklin Bank was organized in 1833 as an individually chartered bank, continuing in business until the charter expired in 1843. Two years later it became the Franklin branch of the State Bank of Ohio but took the unusual step in 1852 of withdrawing from the system and becoming a private bank. Known as the Franklin Bank, it continued on until 1906 when it was merged with the Citizens National Bank. These two notes are classic examples of the old adage "Bad breath is better than no breath at all." Although both are in battered About Good-Good condition with backing, assorted pieces missing, and patches, they are, in fact, the only known non-proof examples of each design. The important question becomes, "When might I see another?" Knowledgeable collectors will not be put off by condition ills on notes of this kind.
