Description

Cincinnati, OH- Miami Exporting Company $5
PMG has identified this piece as a Proprietary Proof and assigned a grade of Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ. The "bank" was the first bank organized in Ohio in 1803. The bank was supposed to facilitate the "exploration of the produce of the Miami Country by boats to New Orleans; and banking it purposed at all originally, was a secondary consideration." A financial crisis took place in 1818-19 and on February 2, 1819, the directors of the Lebanon Miami Banking Company resolved "that it is expedient for this institution to close its business as soon as practicable, that it is not expedient that this resolution be now made public." The bank was closed circa 1822. The bank reopened in 1834, but it closed its doors for good on January 10, 1842. The next day an angry mob formed and looted several of the shadier "banks" in town. This became known as the "Great Cincinnati Bank Riot."
