Cincinnati, OH- Cincinnati & Whitewater Canal Co. $5 July 8, 1840
A tougher denomination to obtain on this issuer, this is an evenly circulated Fine $5. The Cincinnati & Whitewater Canal Co. was chartered in 1837. William Henry Harrison, who became the ninth President of the United States a short time later, was a supporter and subscriber of the canal and even sold land from his North Bend farm as part of the right-of-way for the canal and tunnel. He also provided clay and cordwood that were used to construct bricks for the tunnel. When Harrison died in 1841, he was buried in a tomb on the hill that was a few hundred feet above the North Bend entrance to the tunnel. Perhaps that location is depicted in the central vignette on this note that has an endorsement on the back. Work began on the canal and tunnel in 1839 and the construction was completed in 1843. Six workers were killed during the project. The canal often iced over in the winter and portions of the canal repeatedly flooded due to melting snow and spring rains, leading to the abandonment of the canal by 1858. By then the railroads were moving in and portions of the towpath were sold to the railroads to lay their tracks on.
