Ashtabula, OH- The State Bank of Ohio, Farmers' Branch Counterfeit $1; $10 Faded C26; G56 Wolka 0090-03; -33
The Farmers' Branch at Ashtabula is one of the more challenging branches to acquire. It was one of the last to open, doing so in 1848, and continued a successful business until it became the Farmers' National Bank of Ashtabula (Charter 975) in 1865. The counterfeit $1 is from a lesser quality plate as noted by the facial features on the farmer. It grades Good-Very Good with a lower right corner tip off. The $10, however, appears to be a genuine example that somehow escaped redemption. It grades Good-Very Good with its share of missing margin chunks and pieces. Four counterfeit $1s from this branch are in private hands, with another two in the holdings of the Western Reserve Historical Society and the Cincinnati Historical Society. Two $10s of this design are known from this branch in private hands. This is the first time we have offered any denomination from this branch.
