23rd Regt. O.V.I., OH- G.W. Forbes, Sutler 25¢ ND Keller OH-SC025
The 23rd was mustered into service in June, 1861 and participated in the battles of South Mountain and Antietam where it lost 200 men. In 1863 it was transferred to the Kanawha Valley and in 1864 it participated in operations around Lynchburg. The unit lost 150 men at the battle of Winchester in that same year. The unit ended the war in Martinsburg, WV and was mustered out July 26, 1865. This note is somewhat unusual in that it is fully issued. With a large camp view and orange protectors it grades Very Fine 25 Net according to PMG who notes stains. There are, in fact, some faint stains visible on the back but they are not particularly distracting.
