    Description

Raleigh, NC- State of North Carolina 5¢ June 7, 1817 Cr. 08 PMG Very Good 10.
Part of an $80,000 issue authorized under the terms of Chapter 6 of the state legislature's Act of 1816, this 5¢ was paid out to the State Bank of North Carolina as partial payment for stock taken by the state. These notes were issued between 1817 and 1819. Shull estimated a surviving population of 2-4 notes of this design in 2007 and nothing has changed in the intervening fourteen years to change that estimate. This is the first time we have been able to offer this type in one of our public auctions. PMG notes the tape repair of one of two paper thins that have resulted from a previous dismounting. The note still faces up well and will likely reaffirm the old adage that rarity trumps condition on truly rare notes such as this 5¢ scrip.
