New York, NY- Mechanics Banking Association $2 18__ G8 Proof PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ.
The bank was originally organized in 1838 and continued in business until closing in 1865, apparently without converting to any alternative form of organization. The $2 design has two striking and seldom seen occupational vignettes, one of a woodworker at lower left and one of a stonemason at upper right. In between there is a large gray 2 protector with a small portrait of Washington inside the top loop. The state comptroller die appears in the upper left corner. The note is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock with the usual POCs in the signature lines. While not present in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale, we are aware of three or four examples of this design from other sources.

    Estimate: $600 - $900.
