Buffalo, NY- Buffalo City Bank $2 18__ as G4 Proof PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.
The Buffalo City Bank opened in 1853 and remained in business until 1867 when it closed its doors. Printed by Danforth, Bald & Co., this note has a vignette of a Native American woman peering at a distant city, train, and steamboat (one of the many "Native Americans viewing 'Civilization'" genre vignettes that were popular in this time period). The state bank department die and a vignette of a sailor complete the design. This note is on card that is, in turn, mounted on what appears to be one of the company's archive book cards. The note has the usual POCs in the signature lines. There were two examples in the ABNCo Archives holdings and we are aware of one public auction appearance of an example in 2005. This note was obtained through a private sale in 2010. We are comfortable that the two ABNCo Archives examples may well constitute the total number of surviving $2 proofs on this bank.
