Portsmouth, NH - Piscataqua Exchange Bank $5 18__ Remainder G8
Fancy counters appear at each end, with a vignette of a ship in dry dock seen on the right and a bust of George Washington at left. A lovely near-Gem in appearance, but with a corner fold and a couple of hinge-glue remnants telling a different story. A bank that was in operation from 1844-1863 and became the First National Bank of Portsmouth, charter number 19. This PCGS Gem New 66PPQ is the highest graded $5 note we have sold, as virtually all the Gem or Superb Gem examples we have offered were of the $20 denomination. Much nicer than the 63PPQ note we just sold for $84.
