    Instructions to Captain William W. Parrott from the mercantile firm of Long & Hamilton, Portsmouth, (NH) Sept. 26, 1803. The Portsmouth merchants tell William W. Parrott, commander of the Brig John Adams, to "proceed immediately Wind & Weather permitting to Barbados, or any other port you may think best, in the West Indies...and get the most for your Cargo...& proceed from there to Savannah in Georgia with the proceeds...where you will...procure the best freight for the Brig to Europe and lay out the proceeds of this cargo on our accounts...be careful to write us by every opportunity & inform us...of your proceedings....Wishing you Health and safe return in Due time."

    William Walker Parrott (1778-1858), brother of the sea-captain and US senator John Fabyan Parrott, went on to become a leading citizen of Gloucester and then as a senator from Massachusetts. The firm of Long and Hamilton was formed ca. 1800 and run by John Hamilton, son of the prominent Berwick merchant and ship owner Jonathan Hamilton and either Portsmouth merchant Pierse Long or Edward Long. Seen with a couple of stains and tone.
