    Description

St. Louis, MO (Terr.)- Bank of Missouri $10 May 9, 1818 UNL
The $10 notes are the most frequently seen denomination from the series. Many remaining today, like this example, are "filed Oct. 4, 1821" back-endorsed notes. These were protested after the bank dissolved, which rendered the notes worthless. This variety, with the payee or "bearer" to be written in on an engraved line, is unlisted in Haxby (would be Haxby MO-30 G22, and space was left for it in his reference). The Murray, Draper, Fairman & Co. layout and style are similar, but the vignette makes a dramatic shift. The Jefferson bust on the riverbank, flanked by merchandise, is at bottom center within the denomination and obligation, and JEFFERSON is engraved straight across under the pedestal. The end panels are similar with "TEN" at the left and "MISSOURI" at the right. PCGS Fine 15 with stains and a short edge tear at top right of center noted.
