    Description

St. Louis, MO- Southern Bank of St. Louis at Savannah Branch $1 June 17, 1861 Good.
At first blush, this note is not a thing of beauty, but its history is phenomenal. The name of the Southern Bank of St. Louis is appropriate to some of its partners' sympathies for the Southern cause at the onset of the war. This Civil War era note is from an unregistered series and did not require a bank commissioner signature. Printed by ABNCo., Philada. It has a vibrant green tint and a lovely layout. Charles K. Burt engraved the standing figure holding a torch at left known as Intelligence. Another classically themed vignette, at upper right, displays Science flanked by denomination dies. And at lower right is Alfred Sealy's engraved vignette of a young woman, known as The Bride The bright green color is on the frame and lathework protector across the center. Notes from the Savannah branch are excessively rare with some experts even expressing doubts at one time that the branch had ever gone into operation. With the appearance of this note that doubt has been put to bed. While this note only grades Good with a large repair and lots of residue issues, it is the classic example that "Bad breath is better than no breath at all." This is the only note we have been able to offer from this branch and who knows how long it will be before anything appears in any, yet alone better condition?
