Very Rare Bank of St. Louis (2nd) $5 Issued Note

Kirksville, MO - Bank of St. Louis (2nd), at their Bank in Kirksville $5 May 12, 1860 MO-50 G40c SENC PCGS Apparent Very Fine 20.
The first bank of St. Louis originated in the Territorial period. This second title is much later and most of their circulation was redeemed, making all issued notes rarities. A very rare and beautiful type that originated in the Newman Collection. It may have been part of the original Colonel Green acquisitions which formed the core of this impressive state collection. Most known issued branch notes are from this location. This is slightly later than the other fully issued Kirksville $5 note sold in Newman Part VIII but with a differing, later imprint variation. With gorgeous layout and color, the note was originally engraved by Toppan, Carpenter & Co., Philadelphia & New-York. Although the American Bank Note Company imprint is along the bottom, the "ABC" monogram is still at the upper right. The lovely vermillion color tint is seen on the arcing BANK OF ST. LOUIS at left, directly above the facing woman's portrait that is unique to this type. An intricate FIVE protector is at the bottom, and a color die with white outlined "5" is at the upper right. In the gristmill vignette at the top, a man carries a heavy sack of grain. The horse he holds by the reins has her offspring safely tucked underneath her neck. In the background at left, children rest on a bridge and watch as the waterwheel turns. Signed by the cashier D. C. D. Van Arnam and John J. Anderson, later a major in the Confederate army. The noted "Small Edge Tears" and "Pinholes" detract little from this note's beauty. The color is sharp. Originally sold as lot 28443 in Newman Part VIII for $1,920. This is another tremendous opportunity to obtain a rare and beautiful type with the Newman Collection pedigree. Only advanced collections have an example of this design type. It is certainly extremely rare as an imprint variant.
