Jackson, MS- State of Mississippi $2.50 May 1, 1862
An About Uncirculated example of this $2.50 Cotton Pledged variety with a blue underprint dated May 1, 1862. Very pronounced embossing is observed. Evidence of a prior mounting is noticed along with a few pinholes. Mississippi seceded from the Union on January 9, 1861, the second state to do so. The State of Mississippi issued $5 million worth of "Cotton Pledged" notes in early 1862 that were secured by the stored cotton of planters. A farmer with wheat is seen in the vignette at left and a Native American is portrayed at right.
