    Description

Holley Springs, MS- Exchange Office $5
A stunning remainder printed in striking blue ink by Rawdon, Wright & Hatch. The Native American vignette at left was included on a number of other notes; including $100 post notes from the Bank of Augusta, Augusta, GA; $5 notes from Bank of River Raisen, Monroe, MI; $3 notes from the Tecumseh Bank, Tecumseh, MI; $20 notes from the Republic of Texas; and $5 notes from Mineral Point Bank in Mineral Point, WI. The vignette at right is known as "Farmer Husking Corn" and is based on the work of artist William S. Mount. The engraver is unknown. Among others, that vignette also appears on $5 notes from the Madison & Indianapolis Railroad Company of Columbus, IN. The fertile soil and appealing terrain attracted settlers to Holly Springs from a number of southern states to the east in the 1830s. Land agents set up shop in the town to handle the demand for real estate. This remainder was printed on the backs of Civil War era State of Louisiana notes. Portions of $1, $2, and $3 denominations are observed. This example displays the "Holley" spelling rather than "Holly." Extremely Fine-About Uncirculated.
