Very Choice Bank of St. Paul $2 Proof

St. Paul, MN - Bank of St. Paul $2 Nov. 1, 1858 MN-155 G4, Hewitt B720-D2a. Proof. PCGS Very Choice New 64.
This is a superbly crafted India paper proof engraved and printed by the American Bank Note Company from the four-subject plate authorized. Like the other proofs without protector from this bank, this is the Hewitt plate note and is a very choice example. A farmer and boy work the fields with plow horses at lower left. The dog scampers as it leads the way. At lower right, an oval portrait of a demure young woman. Large "2" counters are in the upper right corners. There are only two proofs of this type reported on the census and this might be the only available example. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" as made and the Hewitt plate note. This completes are marvelous quartet of Bank of St. Paul proofs from the Newman collection.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
