Virtually Superb Fillmore County Bank $5 Proof

    Preston, MN - Fillmore County Bank $5 18__ MN-103 G6 Hewitt B480-D5a. Proof. PCGS Gem New 66PPQ.
This $5 proof completes the denomination trio authorized for the bank and printed by the American Bank Note Company. The finest known of only two proofs listed on the census, it is an exceptionally bold example printed on India paper and mounted on original cardstock. The exemplary and patriotic layout by the ABN firm for this northern state used vignettes from the former Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. catalog. At the center is a spread-winged eagle flanked by gray numeral "5" protectors. At the left end is Union with standing female next to a titled pillar and at the right is a seated America with an eagle and a globe. This is the A position proof (of two that were on the sheet) and Hole Punch Canceled as made. Virtually Superb, this Gem New 66PPQ stands well above the other example known to us. The Schingoethe collection India paper uncertified proof was sold in its Part 4 sale in September 2004 for $5,175. Graded "Uncirculated," it is the Hewitt plate note (credited to R.M. Smythe & Co auction catalog). This bold Gem is worthy of handily eclipsing that realization today.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
