    Bold Bank of Northfield $2 Color Proof

    Northfield, MN - Bank of Northfield $2 18__ MN-98 G4a Hewitt B440-D2. Proof. PCGS Very Choice New 64.
    The Bank of Northfield notes offered here are gorgeous color proofs engraved and printed by the American Bank Note Company using vignette dies and elements from a few of their predecessor firms, but with a Wellstood, Hay and Whiting layout style and tint configuration. The bank never opened for business or issued notes. This lovely India paper proof mounted on its original cardstock is the Hewitt plate note. The top vignette is Wellstood's tranquil scene showing an Indian family paddling a canoe on the river. At the lower left is the ABN vignette of a girl with hair in ringlets, and at lower right is a seated allegorical female. Orange tint frame and micro-lettered panel across is stirring. Hole Punch Cancelled as noted and as made, seen on the vast majority of proofs such as these. A stunningly crafted color proof and the only known proof printed by the ABN in the period. The series and type are also known in "Modern Proprietary" form, printed using the archived plate and tint set with a special process directly to textured cardstock. This proof should not be confused with the above since this is a contemporary proof masterfully using the intaglio process on India paper by the American Bank Note Company. This is bold and beautiful, a superb impression with rich color tint.
