Description

Hokah, MN - La Crosse and La Crescent Bank $2 January 1, 1859 MN-50 G4a, Hewitt B200-D2-2b. PCGS Very Good 10 Apparent.
The bank is rare, and this is an exceedingly rare variant. It is the only one listed on the Hewitt census, offered at auction for the first time from the Newman Collection. The title of this American Bank Note Company $2 is on three lines, arced downward at the top and upward at the bottom, with the middle line curving. Surrounding flourishes provide a dramatic effect. Union, in her elaborate gown, is to the right of center. An agricultural scene is at the lower left, and a young girl at the lower right. Differently styled "2" dies are in the upper corners. Noted are "Tape Repairs on Back; Minor Rust Stains." This condition is quite acceptable due to the note's great rarity and specialist appeal.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
