Shiawassee, MI- The Exchange Bank at Shiawassee Payable at T.P. May, Cleveland, OH $20 Feb. 1, 1838 G32 Lee SHI-1-9 Wolka 0754-07
The bank closed in less than a year during 1838. This example is stamped indicating that it was redeemable in Cleveland, OH by T.P. May. May, who ran a dry goods and general merchandise business, disavowed any knowledge of the arrangement or responsibility for doing anything with the bank's issues. The bank also has the distinction of being the only Michigan chartered bank to use woodblock printing for its notes. PCGS grades this note Apparent Very Fine 20, noting small edge tears and minor ink erosion.
