    Description

Monroe, MI- City of Monroe $1.67 ND (1827) Proprietary Proof
Although in actuality a so-called ABNCo Proprietary Proof printed in the twentieth century from the original plates and used for commercial purposes, this interesting proof does give us a revealing window into the nineteenth century in Michigan. Monroe was settled as early as 1817 but did not begin a significant growth spurt until around 1825-1830. That would more or less coincide with when this document was originally designed and printed as witnessed by the vignette styles. Apparently this was used as a receipt for land purchases in a new plat of land being developed for Monroe. Denomination collectors should love the massive 1 67/100 counter on the right end. An interesting and historical piece worthy of further study and research. PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ.
