Monroe, MI- Bank of Monroe $4 May 6, 1836
This is the rarest denomination of this bank amongst the 1835-38 issues save for the $50. In fact, the 1988 Haxby reference states some very strong values for the time for this odd denomination note. Therefore, it is not surprising that this "IIII" note still hammers for strong money when it infrequently appears in our auctions. This plate letter D note is hard to grade, but we will be conservative and go with Good, with strong signatures for the wear, large tears at center before being backed, and also a reattached right quarter panel with vintage tape, that is now partially failing. Nevertheless, a note that started its circulation journey during the Wolverine State's territorial days.
