La Grange, MI- Cass County Bank $5 Haxby UNL Lee 3
The central vignette on this $5 remainder is Perry's Victory on Lake Erie, a depiction of Commodore Oliver Perry transferring his flag from the USS Lawrence to the USS Niagara at the Battle of Lake Erie on September 10, 1813. The vignette is based on the work of artist Thomas Birch, however the engraver is unknown. The design was also used for $5 notes from the North Providence Bank in Rhode Island. The Cass County Bank was unknown until a small group of notes turned up several years ago, so the notes are unlisted in both the Bowen and Haxby references. PCGS Superb Gem New 67PPQ.
