    Description

Detroit, MI- Bank of Michigan $5 18__ as G24 as Lee DET-6-25 Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
The bank was chartered in 1817 and closed in 1842 after its financial condition was weakened by the Panic of 1837. Interestingly the bank paid off all of its creditors in real estate holdings. The $5 is a classic UB&S design featuring a center vignette of a woodsman with his dog and an oval portrait of Washington. Several of the firm's trademark cameo-like medallion heads were also worked into the design because they were virtually impossible for counterfeiters to successfully copy. The note is printed on India paper without any cancellations. Four examples of this note appeared as part of Lot 788 in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale and may well constitute the entire population of surviving proofs of this design.
