    Description

Springfield, MA- Western Bank $5 Jan. 1, 1851 as G20 Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
The bank was chartered in 1849 and went into receivership in 1858 due to the impact of the Panic of 1857. The note features a large vignette of a herd of wild horses, an oval medallion portrait of an English gentleman of the Elizabethan era, perhaps Shakespeare, and a vignette of Liberty standing by a shield and eagle. Two gray 5 protectors appear in the signature lines. Interestingly, the imprint on this note is Danforth, Bald & Co. rather than Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson / NEBN as listed in Haxby. The note is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock affixed to a Danforth, Bald archive book card and has the usual POCs in the signature lines. We are aware of four examples of this variety that appeared in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale.
